2023 Beechworth Riesling
2023 Beechworth Riesling
Part of our high-altitude Beechworth range. Our second year for this wine. The fruit from the Palmer vineyard in the heart of Stanley, with a hint of our own yet to be released Thorley Riesling. - a true cool-climate late ripening Riesling for lovers of Germanic style wines.
Harvested with moderate ripeness in what the Germans would call a Spätlese-trocken. Dry, textural and with notes of citrus pith, white stone fruit and white florals, all bound with a chalky minerality, zingy acid and the slightest hint of toffee on the finish.

“Fermented in oak puncheons, four months on lees. From a cold, late season and displaying some of the florals, spice and depth associated with long hang time on the vine, this riesling carries impressive flavour and intensity. The essence of cool-climate riesling – lime, lemon, green apple, grapefruit – is joined by gentle florals and a delicious spiciness. Clean-cut acidity gives way to a warm unctuousness across the middle palate. Assured of a bright future.” Awarded 95 points by Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion.
“I’ve lost the press release, so can’t tell you much about the wine, aside from telling you it’s really good. Quite some aromatics here, and with its rosewater, lychee and musky perfume, smells much like a Gewürztraminer. It’s juicy but fresh and bright, again that lychee thing, but cut with citrus and green mango, fine chalky texture is a highlight, a slight savoury character, and a long cool finish. Such a distinctive Riesling, offering abundant character and delicious ease of drinking.” Awarded 94 points by Gary Walsh, for The Wine Front.
“Puncheon fermented and three to four months on lees before bottling. Reticent to start with subtly sweet lemon blossom popping out with a swirl of the glass, followed by lemon juice, lemon rind, honeysuckle, green apple skin, a faint whiff of high quality cedar, and a glimmer of ginger and lemon thyme. It's a quiet little number aromatically, though with poise and complexity enough to intrigue and delight. The palate bursts flavour, however, with lemon juice, lemon rind, apple, and cedar sitting within a chalky, talcy texture and a taut acid frame leading to trademark length. The finish is led by citrus again, with that little flourish of sweet florals in the mouth perfume. This is fresh, bright and complex. Even in a brutally long, cold and wet vintage like 2023, VS&B deliver the goods. 64 dozen produced.” Awarded 93 points by Tom Kline, for Wine Pilot.
“A pale, bright lemon colour. Dried papaya, white peach and lime leaf aromas. Supple and approachable on the palate entry. Tropical fruits, fine acidity, lime juice and lemongrass all melded into a soft harmonic that instantly appeals. Good length and finishes with some chalky drying grip. A lovely wine that will provide pleasure across many palates.” Awarded 92 points by Stuart Knox, for The Real Review.
