2023 Beechworth Chardonnay
2023 Beechworth Chardonnay
Part of our high-altitude Beechworth range. This is our second release of this Chardonnay, from Thorley and Brunnen vineyards, a mix of old and new oak, blended to provide an early drinking snapshot of our premium single site release. To be released in Autunm 2024.
White florals, notes of crunchy unripe stone fruits, carambola play against almond liqueur and some more complexing savoury notes. The palate has precise linear acidity and absolutely sits in that long, minerally, fine cool climate modern Australian Chardonnay style.

“Predominantly made from declassified Thorley Vineyard fruit with a small amount from the Brunnen Vineyard. High quality cedar and gunsmoke make for a striking start. Oh how the flinty reduction excites! Sweet cinnamon spice fills things out, along with apple blossom, green apple, and white nectarine. Some sourdough notes from the lees add dimension and complexity. At this stage, I'm already thinking this punches above its $44 price point, and that's before the wine's even passed my lips. The palate has good intensity and lifted fruit sliced by a spine of bristling acidity. Cinnamon spiced apple, lemon, cedar, apple blossom, and white nectarine are pulled long through the palate, the acid clean and bright. Great complexity, texture, intensity and length here. A steal for the money and only 56 dozen made. Run, don't walk.” Awarded 94 ponts by Tom Kline, for Wine Pilot.
“Essentially, a declassified Thorley, the winemaker chooses 'fruit-forward' parcels for this wine. Lively in the scent of spring flowers, citrus blossom, honeysuckle, white peach and Asian pear. Definitely falls into a fruit-forward style, meshing florals, citrus and stone fruits across the middle palate before tapering off towards the finish. Juicy acidity is a driving force. Still early days for this wine.” Awarded 94 points by Jeni Port, for Halliday Wine Companion.
“Hewn from vineyards around Beechworth, a regional blast of chardy. Spot on. So drinkable, so delicious. Cool refrains of saline minerality, alpine herbs, more green apple and grapefruit in its restrained and refreshing way. Touches of stone fruit, yeah, maybe, but gentle. It’s a tightly wound, vibrant and fresh feeling chardonnay that leans into its inherent regional restraint well. A delight to drink, high refreshment factor in tow. We good.” Awarded 93 points by Mike Bennie, for The Wine Front.
“Mid-straw and vibrantly bright in the glass. Lifted and layered aromas of struck match, grapefruit pith, white flowers, just-ripe white stone fruit and grilled nuts. Really multi-faceted and inviting. Fine, linear and precise in flavour. There’s plenty of citrus, stone fruit and mineral at play, along with a nougat nuttiness. A serious acid line and real crunchiness. It’s a little skeletal at the moment and may pick up some palate weight with time.” Awarded 92 points by Aaron Brasher, for The Real Review.
